Rewrite text at a plain, elementary, middle school, or high school reading level.
This plain language simplifier rewrites text at the reading level you choose — Plain follows plainlanguage.gov style, or pick Elementary, Middle school, or High school for a specific target audience. It's built for the plain-language compliance use case: patient instructions, legal notices, government and education content, and any writing covered by the US Plain Writing Act.
Add terms to preserve — a product name, a defined legal term, a drug name — and the rewrite keeps them verbatim; if it can't simplify the text while keeping every listed term, it refuses rather than silently dropping one. The grade level and reading ease scores (Flesch-Kincaid) are computed before and after, so you can see the rewrite actually moved the score — not just trust that it did.
Need this in your own product or pipeline? The Simplify API takes the same inputs and returns the same rewrite and readability scores as JSON, or use the Sapling MCP server to simplify text from an AI assistant. Pair it with the readability utility to check a score before deciding whether to rewrite.
